The world that we knew of when we were children ourselves, looks nothing like the one our children live in today. The challenge in preparing for a future unknown is real. A 2017 report by the World Economic Forum predicts that “65% of children entering primary school today will have jobs that do not yet exist and for which their education will fail to prepare them”. As technology evolves, education needs to adapt accordingly. The big question to ask: Are you preparing your child for the future?
As educators ahead of the curve, we have always subscribed to the school of thought of raising a “Global Child”. Beyond the textbooks, exposure to diversity and soft skills can affect their ability to succeed and compete in the ever-connected global marketplace. We believe in our duty as parents and educators, to impart these critical soft skills (often neglected in traditional education) to prepare them for the future.
Sounds like a daunting task? Don’t worry, it is easier than you think. While it doesn’t require a whole lot of resources, it requires a fundamental shift in our traditional ways of thinking. Here are some small steps on how you can start making that shift today:
Encourage Global Awareness
Our technologically advanced world has made information so easily accessible to society in the form of the internet, new media platforms, global connectedness etc. We have a world of information at our fingertips, so how can we use it to our advantage?
Starting the conversation about the world and its diversity early in their development will allow children to connect wider ideas that they may not be exposed to in a curriculum-based classroom. Some simple ideas include:
· Read them books exploring communities around the world
· Watch the news together and discuss any questions they may have
· Use social media to expose them to world-wide trending topics
While achieving good grades is important to success, soft skills like cross-cultural competency are increasingly valued and needed for succeeding in an interconnected world. On top of that, building a child’s awareness about the world fosters a sense of duty and responsibility towards it. We want to raise children who are aware of global challenges as adults and be able to navigate the future responsibly and successfully.
Create Opportunities to Interact with Different Cultures
While travelling and showing children the world is the best way to expose and develop them for the future, it is not always the most cost-efficient and practical way. Many parents have careers and other life responsibilities to be able to take time off to travel often with their children, but there are many other opportunities at home too.
Encouraging children to mix with others from different cultures either through school, activities, or friends and family builds their social skills and awareness about the world. Furthermore, with the availability of the internet, children are now able to connect and foster relationships with people globally. However, do be mindful that it should be done with parental guidance and supervision.
One of the ways we create this opportunity at “Seeds to Shine”, is to through classes with our experienced and qualified international teachers. With private online home tuition classes taught by our International Teachers online, your children can start discovering the world beyond their community on a regular basis.
Why Learn from an International Teacher?
Raising global children requires a shift in mindset and perspective about educational needs for the future, so it isn’t necessarily a job suited to schoolteachers who are already working hard on curriculum for students to succeed academically.
What can an International Teacher do differently? With our focus on preparing our “Global Child” for the future, our teachers have come from a strong International background where they have lots of global life experience to share and imprint onto their students. Their experience with a range of culturally diverse students also gives them interesting perspectives and unique ways of teaching. Our International Teachers are also exposed to various global learning strategies, which allows them to use their own unique strategies to encourage and develop a child’s curiosity for learning. This is especially important in catering to the unique needs of each child.
